OMass secures £230 million to advance drug development

Oxford-based OMass Therapeutics has raised £230 million in Series C financing to advance its drug development pipeline, including plans for later-stage clinical studies.

The round was co-led by Bain Capital Life Sciences, Forbion and Novo Holdings, with participation from Syncona. It is one of the largest European biotech funding rounds reported this year and provides OMass with resources to progress its lead programmes, including OMS1620.

For laboratory professionals, the funding draws attention to the analytical science behind the company’s approach. OMass uses native mass spectrometry alongside chemistry and biochemistry to study proteins and their interactions. These methods can help researchers investigate molecular targets that are difficult to assess using conventional drug discovery techniques.

Native mass spectrometry allows scientists to examine proteins while preserving aspects of their natural structure and interactions. Combined with other experimental methods, it can provide evidence about how a potential drug interacts with its target. That information can help teams select compounds for further development and investigate why particular candidates may work.

Moving a candidate through clinical development requires more than a promising discovery result. Researchers must continue to assess its safety, determine appropriate doses and gather evidence of its effects in patients. The new financing is expected to support this work as OMass advances its lead candidates towards Phase 2 trials.

OMS1620 is among the programmes the company plans to progress, with the funding supporting research into treatments for rare disorders. As with any investigational medicine, its clinical value will depend on the results of further studies.

The investment also reflects the scale of resources needed to translate laboratory research into potential therapies. Drug development brings together analytical scientists, chemists, biologists, manufacturing specialists and clinical teams, each contributing evidence at different stages.

For the wider UK life-sciences sector, the round is a notable example of investors backing a drug discovery platform built around specialist laboratory capability. It illustrates how advances in measurement and molecular analysis can inform the selection and development of new treatment candidates.

The next test for OMass will be how its programmes perform as clinical research progresses. For now, the financing gives the company greater capacity to pursue that work and keeps attention on the role of analytical technologies in drug development.
