Oral bacteria and fungi linked to 3.5x higher pancreatic cancer risk, major study finds

A study of 122,000 people by NYU Langone Health has tied 27 oral bacteria and fungi species to a 3.5-fold higher risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers found Candida fungi, usually harmless, present in pancreatic tumours, alongside bacteria linked to gum disease. The findings, published in JAMA Oncology, provide the most detailed analysis yet of how oral microbes influence cancer risk. Scientists say profiling the mouth’s microbiome could one day help identify those most in need of early screening.
