NHS home testing hits 100,000 milestone in hepatitis C fight

The NHS has hit a major milestone in its drive to eliminate hepatitis C, with more than 100,000 people in England now having taken advantage of its confidential home testing service. Since launching in May 2023, the service has provided thousands with quick access to testing and treatment — and has already prevented hundreds of cases of serious illness.

Hepatitis C, if untreated, can cause liver failure and cancer, but with antiviral treatment, more than 90% of patients can be cured within weeks. Many people, however, are unaware they carry the virus because it can remain symptomless for years. By offering free, at-home test kits, the NHS has made it easier than ever to reach people who might otherwise go undiagnosed.

The impact has been particularly significant in disadvantaged communities. Data shows that 70% of all positive results came from the most deprived half of the population, reinforcing the importance of targeted outreach in reducing health inequalities. The highest positivity rates were seen among people aged 35 to 49, a group often linked to risk factors such as previous injecting drug use or exposure to infected blood products.

The test involves a simple finger-prick and a small blood sample sent to a lab. For those testing positive, NHS teams ensure rapid follow-up and treatment. The scheme has been praised as a key driver behind England being one of the first countries expected to eliminate hepatitis C well before the World Health Organization’s 2030 target.
