US Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr will cancel 22 government contracts for mRNA vaccines, shifting $500m in funding to alternative platforms.
Kennedy has announced his department will terminate funding for 22 mRNA vaccine projects, redirecting $500 million towards what he calls “safer, broader” platforms that remain effective despite viral mutations.
A vocal critic of mRNA technology, he claimed vaccines failed to provide lasting protection against Covid, flu, and other respiratory infections.
The move affects projects tackling viruses such as bird flu and involves companies including Pfizer and Moderna, whose mRNA Covid-19 vaccines were used in global mass inoculations.
The decision comes two months after Kennedy dismissed the government’s vaccine advisory panel.
