The NHS is building a pioneering AI research screening platform to accelerate diagnosis and transform clinical trials. Dubbed AIR-SP, the £6 million project is being developed by NHS England with funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
The cloud-based system will host multiple AI tools in one secure environment, giving all NHS trusts streamlined access to cutting-edge technology. Currently, 90% of AI pilots stall because every trust must build its own IT infrastructure from scratch—a costly and time-consuming process.
With AIR-SP, trusts can test tools simultaneously across the country, potentially saving £2–3 million per multi-site study and bringing innovations to patients faster. The platform will debut in the NIHR-funded EDITH trial, involving nearly 700,000 women in breast cancer screening. Full rollout for research use is expected in 2027.
