The NHS is overhauling its £10 billion medical technology procurement process, moving from a “cheapest-first” to a “patient-first” strategy. The Department of Health and Social Care says the change will cut waiting lists, deliver better outcomes, and save billions in the long term by valuing performance and sustainability over headline cost.
Thirteen NHS trusts will pilot the new value-based procurement model, supported by NHS Supply Chain and the London Procurement Partnership, with wider rollout planned for 2026. Priority areas include cardiology, vascular treatment, and AI-powered diagnostic tools.
Officials say the approach will create a more attractive environment for medtech innovators while ensuring frontline staff and patients benefit from equipment that is safer, more effective, and longer-lasting.
