AI used to predict potential new antibiotics in ground-breaking study

A new study shows that scientists have used an algorithm to mimic the entirety of microbial diversity, advancing antibiotic resistance research.

The study was published in the journal Cell and delves into how machine learning technology has predicted a potential new antibiotic in a global microbiome. This represents significant advancements in the use of AI in research. It also found almost one million new molecules encoded or hidden within dark matter.

César de la Fuente stated, “It would have taken many, many, many, many years to do that, but with an algorithm, we can sort through vast amounts of information, and it just speeds up the process.” This research will greatly benefit the public health sector by helping to combat antibiotic resistance.
