Unilever and Pioneer Group have launched Gastronomica, a state-of-the-art food and drink incubator at Colworth Science Park in Bedford. Designed to support start-ups and growing businesses, the facility builds on Colworth’s reputation as a hub for food innovation, already home to Unilever’s Global R&D Innovation Centre and key firms like DSM-Firmenich and Symrise.
The 16,000 sq ft facility, located in the Magniac building, has been fitted with cutting-edge microbiology and innovation suites, including equipment for centrifugation, imaging, and chromatography, donated by Unilever. Due to open early this year, Gastronomica will provide start-ups with access to advanced resources and a supportive community of experts.
“Gastronomica will strengthen Colworth’s position as the leading location for food and agri-tech innovation,” said Keith Purdie, Colworth’s commercial director. “Being part of this ecosystem, alongside a global player like Unilever, is a huge advantage for start-ups.” The incubator also connects businesses with Cranfield and Northampton universities and the Midlands Food Alliance.
Pioneer’s executive director Simon Hoad highlighted plans for industry-led workshops, sensory experiences, and demonstrations, while Julie Merrick, Unilever R&D site leader, said: “Together, we’re creating a vibrant hub to drive the future of food and drink innovation.”
